Pass PMI-CP Exam: A Study Plan That Works

Pass PMI-CP exam on your first attempt with a focused study plan, the four ECO modules that matter most, and proven exam-day tactics that work.

Pass PMI-CP Exam: A Study Plan That Works

What Is PMI-CP Certification?

To pass PMI-CP exam day, it helps to first know exactly what you are signing up for. The PMI Construction Professional (PMI-CP)™ is the only internationally recognized certification that offers an in-depth curriculum focused on the construction industry.

This advanced certification helps working professionals lift their careers. It readies construction project managers to lead, plan and manage contracts. The credential also equips you to navigate challenges and stay relevant in an ever-evolving field.

McKinsey projects ongoing global economic infrastructure investment every year through 2035. That spend in turn fuels a growing reliance on skilled construction professionals. The PMI-CP certification therefore caters to this demand. It also gives professionals the knowledge and skills they need to lead, plan and manage construction projects well.

Professionals who earn the PMI-CP certification can demonstrate advanced knowledge in construction project management. That knowledge specifically includes leading teams, managing contracts and applying best practices tailored to the construction industry.

Maybe you want to become PMI-CP certified, yet you cannot find much information on it. PMI.org and the wider web stay thin on detail. Don't fear, because yours truly has gone through the pain of studying the entire 7 modules and passed with 'Above Average'.

Which Modules Do You Need To Pass The PMI-CP Exam?

As of February 2024, you only need to study 4 of the 7 available PMI-CP modules for the capstone exam. The first module is Construction Contract and Risk Management. Module two then covers Construction Project Communication. Next comes Construction Interface Management. The fourth module finally covers Construction Scope and Change Order Management.

PMI meanwhile felt it was necessary to pre-fix the course names with 'Construction'. I don't think the prefix is necessary. It does signal that the content is for professionals in that industry. You can review PMI's own description of the credential on the official PMI website.

How Do You Study For Success?

To pass PMI-CP exam questions, you need solid material. Free books or cheap online courses are scarce. Unlike PMP, you would be hard pressed to find much such help on the internet. Here therefore is a short and concise way forward.

**Option 1:** You can purchase the 4 eLearning modules and study on your own. If you have enough will-power, this is the most cost-effective method of study. You should also factor in the matter of the separate exam fee.

**Option 2:** Find an Authorised Training Partner (ATP) equipped to help you with exam preparation. The ATP should therefore have qualified instructors. Otherwise you will find yourself led by a proverbial blind. The probability of passing rises as a result in proportion to the effort invested.

How I Managed To Pass PMI-CP Exam Day

Back in September 2023, when PMI-CP was in its infancy, I passed the exam early. I think I was the 29th person to pass it globally since the inception of the program. The capstone however covered all 7 PMI-CP modules. I must admit it was thus about 3 times more difficult than the PMP exam.

That requirement is now reduced to 4, as mentioned previously, which should lessen the study effort.

I took the option of self-study using PMI's eLearning modules. This was only because there were meanwhile no qualified instructors anywhere in the world. In fact I think I became one of the first PMI-CP qualified instructors ever.

For structure, I stuck to an 8-week study plan. Each week I would finish one eLearning module. I also prepared an exam note while completing each module. On the 8th week I went over the exam notes 2-3 hours a day, or until I felt comfortable. I then took the exam on the 9th week.

The plan worked in the end, but my word it was a hard slog (work)! I was so relieved to learn that I passed. That night I think I skipped dinner. I meanwhile hit the beer straight after the exam.

Any Last Words Of Wisdom?

Even with the reduced number of modules, the PMI-CP remains a difficult exam. To pass PMI-CP exam day, be prepared to put in some hard work. Seriously consider as well taking an instructor led course with an Authorised Training Partner. That single decision can thus be the difference between a near miss and a comfortable pass.
